01 — THE IDEA

One assistant. A job worth doing.

You don't need another chat window. You need a reliable starting point for the work you do again and again.

Google Gemini Gems let you customize Gemini with instructions for particular tasks. You could create a study coach, a coding mentor, or an editor that follows your preferred writing style. Instead of starting from scratch, you begin with a defined role and a clearer set of expectations.

Notebook and desk setup for organizing ideas and planning work — Good AI workflows begin with clear thinking, not complicated tools.

↗

The useful distinction

A Gem gives you reusable instructions for a task. It does not guarantee perfect answers or replace checking important information.

02 — LET'S BUILD

From a blank screen to your first Gem.

Keep your first assistant simple. You can make it more sophisticated after testing it on real work.

Open Google Gemini

Go to Gemini ↗

Find the Gems section

Look for Gems in the interface. Available features can depend on your account, region, and current product rollout.

Give your assistant a clear role

Explain its purpose, the tasks it should handle, the context it needs, and how it should format answers.

Test it with real questions

Try a normal request and a difficult one. Refine the instructions when the answers are too vague or too long.

03 — PICK YOUR WORKFLOW

Four assistants you could build today.

Choose a real problem first. The best assistant is the one that makes that problem easier.

FOR STUDENTS

The study coach

Turn difficult subjects into simple explanations, examples, and practice questions.

“Explain this topic in simple language, then test my understanding.”

Code displayed on a developer's computer

FOR DEVELOPERS

The coding mentor

Understand errors, review solutions, and learn why a fix works.

“Explain the cause first, then show the fix and edge cases.”

Notebook used for drafting and editing text

FOR CREATORS

The writing editor

Improve clarity and flow while preserving your intended meaning.

“Improve this draft without inventing facts or changing my voice.”

FOR TEAMS

The research organizer

Build an outline, organize questions, and identify claims that need verification.

“Separate verified facts from assumptions and list what needs checking.”

04 — THE SECRET IS CLARITY

Give your Gem a better brief.

Use this structure to make your instructions more specific. You can adapt it to almost any repeatable task.

THE INSTRUCTION BLUEPRINT 5 PARTS

RoleWho should the assistant act as?

TaskWhat outcome should it produce?

ContextWhat background or constraints matter?

FormatHow should it organize the answer?

Quality checksWhat should it verify, disclose, or avoid?

For more prompting advice, see Google's guide to writing effective prompts ↗.

05 — BEFORE YOU GO

Questions people often ask.

Do I need coding skills to create a Gem?

No. Creating a basic Gem mainly involves writing instructions. You do not need to build a separate application.

Can I create different Gems for different tasks?

Yes, you can create separate assistants for different workflows, subject to the current features and limits of your account.

Will my Gem always give accurate answers?

No. Check important facts against reliable sources. Custom instructions improve direction, not guaranteed accuracy.

Where can I learn how Gems work?

Start with Google's official Gems documentation for current instructions and availability.

THE TAKEAWAY

Start small. Make it useful. Improve it over time.

Choose one task you repeat every week, create a Gem around it, and judge the result by how much easier the task becomes.
